PREGNANCY AND NEW CHILD DEFERMENT

A runner may defer their entry if they meet one of these requirements. Please click the button below to read the entire policy. This policy allows runners up to two years to use their lottery bypass.

  • The runner becomes pregnant after entering the race.

  • The runner’s partner gives birth to a child in the time between the runner entering the race and the deferral deadline.

  • The runner adopts a child under the age of 5 in the time between the runner entering the race and the deferral deadline.

The following rules apply to Pregnancy or New Child deferrals:

  • A deferral gives the runner one lottery bypass which may be used in the two proceeding races (ie, next two years).

  • The entry is not transferable.

  • All qualification requirements for the following year’s race must be met. No exceptions.

  • The runner must follow the same lottery rules as all applicants, or they forfeit the deferral.

  • The deferral does not roll over the entry fee, trail work opt-outs, mile-to-dollars donations, or additional purchases.

  • The deadline for requesting a deferral is 31 days before the race.

CANCELLATION POLICY

While we will make every possible effort to avoid it, there are times when our race will get cancelled. The COVID-19 pandemic forced us to cancel the 2020 event, and there is the ever-present risk of wildfire, bad air quality, or both. Our policy, effective for the 2024 race is as follows:

In the event that the High Lonesome 100 cannot be put on safely, we will cancel the event. Such circumstances include, but are not limited to: pandemics, wildfires, air quality, severe weather, and public safety threats. Depending on the circumstances, we will strive to find a balance between cancelling far enough ahead that runners have not invested significant funds while waiting until we are as absolutely certain as possible that the event must be cancelled. Cancellation announcements will be made through email, our website, and on our social media channels.

Depending on the lead time of a cancellation, the race will make every effort possible to offer a partial refund but this is not guaranteed and please do not consider this a likely scenario. We will also look at providing a discount for the rolled over runners to use, but this is not guaranteed and should not be expected.

In the event of a cancellation, runners will be eligible to receive a lottery bypass to the following year. This lottery bypass must be used in the next calendar year, no exceptions. Additionally, if the race is cancelled for a second year in a row, no lottery bypasses will be issued. All runners will be eligible for the lottery and will be given application tickets as if they had applied to the lottery for both cancelled years. Pregnancy and New Child Deferrals are still available whenever applicable.

In plainer English, we’ll do everything we can to avoid cancelling, but we’re not going to put on an unsafe event. If we can find an insurance policy, we’ll buy it. However, after the pandemic most companies are not insuring ultramarathons. We were not able to find a cancellation insurance policy for the 2024 High Lonesome.

NON CANCELLATION REFUNDS/DEFERRALS

We do not offer refunds outside of the instances listed in our cancellation policy, nor do we offer deferrals outside of our Pregnancy and New Child Deferral Policy.

This means that we won’t give a refund (or deferral) because you got injured, have travel restrictions, didn’t train, etc. The ONLY instance we’re willing to consider on a case-by-case basis is if you are undergoing a significant and unexpected financial or life disaster (such as massive medical bills). If you feel that you are undergoing a significant and unexpected financial or life disaster, please email the RD to begin a conversation. Please remember that we offer this out of empathy for the challenges that life can throw.
